How to get storage space

This page explains how to get a free storage space on the web, so that you can submit parts to PartLib.

The first step is to find a storage provider, in our example it will be Geocities.

With geocities you need to become a member to create a web space. To register as a member follow the Sign in / Sign me up link.
You will be prompted to create a "Yahoo ID and password", fill in all the mandatory fields. You must provide an e-mail address where they will send you a mail to enable your account.

After successfully creating a user ID you will have to choose a neighborhood. In this example I choose SiliconValley but you can choose any neighborhood, it will be contained in your future URL.

You will have to fill in some information fields about you future site. After submitting them you will be notified that you have been assigned a new WWW URL, in this example http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bit/1551

You have now your own web space with 11 Mb of free space. You can modify your home page, add pages and upload files. To upload files you need to go back to geocities home and choose upload files.
But using this method you will not be able to upload anything else than web pages.

If you want to upload other files you will need to access to your web space by FTP. FTP is the File Transfer Protocol that allows you to upload/download files on the web. You will need an FTP client (WS_FTP from Ipswitch is a good one, you can download it here).

Once you have a FTP client, you will have to connect to geocities' FTP. With WS_FTP you just have to click on the connect button and type the following information:

Hostname : ftp.geocities.com
User ID : "your ID you just created on geocities"
Password : "The password you gave for your geocities ID"

Push ok, and after the login sequence you should be able to view your geocities root directory

With WS_FTP, to upload files, you only need to select the files to upload in the left pane and push the "-->" to upload them to the right pane.

If you uploaded it to the root directory, he complete URL of your part will be :

http://www.geocities.com/"Your neighborhood and sub-neighborhood"/"Your web number"/"the file name"

In our example the file "screw3.0x25.IGS.zip" will have the URL

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bit/1551/screw3.0x25.IGS.zip
